Fire Safety for Older Adults

We are never too old to learn something new, and this includes Fire Safety. Partnering with U.S. Fire Administration, education of fire safety with older adults is just as important with educating our children. Fires can happen at any time and it is essential that everyone is prepared. Older Adults have an increased risk of dying in a fire. Helping to prevent older adult fire deaths in our community is important, so we ask you to talk with our parents about fire safety.

Did you know that in 2018, older adults in the United States:

• Had 2.6 times greater risk of dying in a fire than the total population of the country.
• Ages 85 and over were 3.8 times more likely to die in a fire than the population.

Available to the public, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and United States Fire Administration have multiple programs just for our elderly community neighbors. These programs include:

• Assistance with home assessments.
• Smoke Alarm selection and installation
• Education
  • Fire Extinguisher Instruction
  • Home and Facility Evacuation Plans

Each year we assist a majority of the nursing homes and assisted living facilities in their evacuation plans, conduct fire evacuation drills and provide fire extinguisher training.
